Biogeochemical cycle Part 4// Oxygen Cycle
OXYGEN CYCLE
Oxygen cycle is a biogeochemical cycle in which
movement of the oxygen occur through the atmosphere, biosphere and the
lithosphere.
Its circulation happens along with carbon dioxide
and water.
The amount of oxygen in the atmosphere is about 21%.
Oxygen is an important element required for life. It
is mainly required for breathing, combustion, decomposition and rusting.
Oxygen enters the body of all living beings in the
form of atmospheric oxygen.
The step involved in the oxygen cycle are-
·
During the process of photosynthesis
green plants release oxygen back into the atmosphere.
·
This oxygen used by aerobic organism
during the process of respiration.
·
Animals exhale carbon dioxide back into
the atmosphere during the expiration.
·
This carbon dioxide is again used by the
plants during photosynthesis.
In
short, the oxygen of the atmosphere enters the body of living beings by the
respiration and freely returns to the atmosphere by photosynthesis, thus the
cycle of oxygen in the atmosphere continues.
The
oxygen cycle is mainly involved in maintaining the level of oxygen in the
atmosphere.
